Altstetten, Switzerland

Built in 1967, the „Schnellgutbahnhof“ in Altstetten Zürich was once a highly technological advanced distribution warehouse for Zürich. Initially used by the SBB, it now functions as connection between rails and roads for a private transport company.
The structural system with big hollow reinforced concrete beams, allows for the nearly column-free space inside. Hyperbolic paraboloid Shells together with acrylic skylights are used as roof elements.
As a result of the large scale of the hall and the repetition of prefabricated elements, the roof appears as a seemingly endless structure and forms a nearly surreal element in the landscape if seen from above.
